THE BATTLE OF WORDS……29TH COL FRANK VON GOLDSTEIN MEMORIAL DEBATE

YPS, Patiala organised the most prestigious Col Frank Von Goldstein Memorial Debate on May 8-10. This debate is held every year in the honour of Col Frank Von Goldstein (former Headmaster and an iconic figure of the school), who initiated this debate in 1989.

As many as 15 schools from all over India participated in this battle of words. The competition was split in four phases: Preliminary, Quarter, Semi Final and Final. Four teams had qualified for the finals and hardliner debate after defeating other 11 teams in preliminary and quarter final rounds held earlier. The final round of the battle of words culminated with much excitement.

The intense research done by the teams was evident in their confidence, clarity of content, persuasive speech and body language. There were a lot of arguments and counter arguments. The team members spoke eloquently about their topics.

The debates were held in a modified Parliamentary form. The esteemed panel of Judges included the revered board member of YPS, Mrs. Ramneetinder Kaur, Mrs. Kumkum Bajaj, Retired HOD and Dean of language department of Punjabi University and a Soft Skill trainer at INFOSYS, Dr. Hartej Tiwana, HOD and Associate Professor for English in GCG, Patiala.

The two teams to reach the final round of debate were Yadavindra Public School, Patiala and Bhawan Vidyalaya, Chandigarh. The topic for last deciding round was “WOMEN INTEREST STANDS SUBJUGATED IN A MALE DOMINATED SOCIETY”.

There was a Hardliners debate prior to the final round of debate. Vivek high School, Chandigarh and MGD Girl’s School, Jaipur were the participants of the Hardliners debate. The topic was “RESERVATION IN A PLURALISTIC SOCIETY IS A TRAVESTY OF JUSTICE”. After speaking against the motion, Vivek High School, Chandigarh won the Hardliner debate.

In the final round of debate, Yadavindra Public School, Patiala and Bhawan Vidyalaya, Chandigarh gave each other a tough competition but the arguments made by Bhawan Vidyalaya students in the favour of the topic helped them clinch the prestigious 29TH COL FRANK VON GOLDSTEIN MEMORIAL DEBATE.

During this event, the first ever ROCK BAND of YPS named CAFFEINE was introduced. After the heated battle of words, the venue came alive with the melodious and lively rock music.

The chief guest congratulated the Rock Band singers for a wonderful show and gave away trophy to the winning team.
